Jakky is the proud owner of Homes in Focus…a business she has built up organically based on firm values, solid relationships and a total love and enthusiasm for all aspects of property. Her true vocation!
Jakky’s first experience of property was on a construction site for a summer job in 1979 but she had always had a real interest in architecture….so in the early 80’s she moved to Scotland from Wales and instantly fell in love with Edinburgh and it’s beautiful buildings. But even back then Jakky chose to live in Fife because of the affordability, something many other Fife dwellers have done.
After a series of events including buying, selling, letting and using agents, Jakky decided to go it alone and manage her buy-to-let portfolio herself. Homes in Focus was born out of other landlords and potential landlords wanting the type of hands-on approach and property knowledge that she had and was offering.
Not one to rest on her laurels, Jakky has always thrown herself into further training, knowledge building and courses (this included going back to university in her thirties), building up quite a mixture of qualifications: an HNC in Marketing; a Diploma in Combined Studies (Psychology and Marketing); a professional qualification level 6 Technical Award in Residential Lettings, Sales and Marketing; NHBC Building; various appliance and boiler instruction courses; tiling; carpentry and most recently has qualified with a Diploma in Estate Agency!
In 2008 she beat off tough competition to be crowned ‘Scottish Property Women of the Year’ sponsored by Bradford & Bingley when her hard-work and dedication was formally recognised.
Jakky would describe herself as logical, hard-working, enthusiastic but also realistic and forthright. Her honest, transparent and upfront approach with clients is what they value most alongside her friendly, approachable nature. She is fully immersed in the day to day running of the business and is involved in all aspects of lettings and sales – from seller and landlord liaison to taking calls and carrying out valuations.
“I love working with people, and I love to see people moving on in life. I enjoy helping people solve a problem or achieve a dream. I like to think of my business as a life to be nurtured, and my staff are the nourishment it needs. If I look after it properly, feed the business with well-tended clients it will thrive and my business family will have a happy future.”
When not at work, Jakky can be found wearing a pair of wellies tackling the persistent weeds in her garden. Or relaxing in the same garden with a glass of red wine! She also loves spending time with her grandson.
Her most proud achievement is having moved from Wales to Scotland with just £50 in her pocket and with no job to go to, she was terrified. “My parents told me not to worry, because if it didn’t work out I could always go back home.” Jakky was unemployed for all of one and a half hours!!
